Periyar TBI is closely working with the Entrepreneurship Society of the Periyar Maniammai University. The university management is persistent about the student community acquiring some extra skills during the course of studies. PMU campus itself creates more opportunities to learn, test and practice innovative ideas. Success stories are already read in introducing many innovations - 100 kW & 200 kW biomass gasifiers for captive power requirement; profitable solid waste management practice through vermicompost; Solar energy for irrigation, lighting and water heating; in-house consultancy support in construction, fabrication, software development and innovative welfare programmes for staff and students - all entrepreneurial by themselves. Periyar Maniammai University instills all of its stakeholders and visitors with the entrepreneurial and innovative profile. When the students are encouraged to venture, many bright ideas pour in. It does not only keep the student community encaged, but also channelise their youthful energy towards constructive thoughts, organised approaches and effective implementation methods.

A good start

Tamil Nadu Adidravidar Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) with the support of CII, Entrepreneurship Development Institute (TN state government), HR organisation ma-foi and Rural TBI of IIT-Madras has organised one-month residential EDP for college students in June 2010 at IIT-Madras. More than 50 entrepreneurs shared their experience with the 50 participants drawn from various colleges in Tamil Nadu through selection.As part of the training students were teamed as four members and asked to present their Business plans.About 10 plans were submitted and plans submitted by the teams having students from PMU won both first and second places after rigorous screening by eminent industrialists as jury.Students received certificates and cash awards from the Deputy Chief Minister Mr.M.Stalin in Chennai in June 2010. Honourable ministers Pongalur Palanisamy and Mrs.Tamilarasi felicitated the students during the valedictory function of the programme.Five students from Periyar Maniammai University participated in the training and the team, which won first prize also won the innovative project award for its honey based rural enterprise idea. M.Gowrishanker, a B.Tech (IT) student and active member of the ES-PMU was in the team. Periyar TBI will mentor the Business Plan mooted by the winners.
